## Why Tracking Your Macros Can Help You Get Fitter and Stronger

When people decide they want to get fitter, stronger or change how they look, exercise is usually the first thing they think about.

Training is important, but what you eat plays a huge part too.

You don’t need a complicated diet, you don’t need to ban your favourite foods, and you certainly don’t need to live on chicken, rice and broccoli.

One useful approach is simply to start paying attention to your "macros".

### What are macros?

Macros, short for macronutrients, are the main nutrients your body gets from food:

Protein - Helps your body repair and build muscle.

Carbohydrates - Provide energy for training and everyday life.

Fats - An important part of a healthy diet and used by the body for numerous functions.

Almost everything you eat contains a combination of these.

Tracking your macros simply means keeping an eye on how much protein, carbohydrate and fat you're eating.

### Why bother tracking them?

Quite simply, it gives you a better understanding of what you're actually eating.

It is surprisingly easy to eat more or less than we think. We can also think we're eating plenty of protein, only to discover we're actually getting very little.

Tracking removes some of the guesswork.

Instead of wondering whether your diet is supporting your training, you begin to have something measurable that you can adjust.

### Protein is particularly important when getting stronger

If strength and muscle are part of your goal, protein becomes especially important.

Training gives your body a reason to adapt. Protein provides the building blocks your body needs to repair and build muscle.

Tracking your food can help you see whether you're regularly getting enough protein, rather than simply hoping that you are.

### Carbs aren't the enemy

Carbohydrates often get an unfair reputation.

If you're exercising regularly, carbohydrates can be extremely useful because they provide energy that helps fuel your workouts and daily activity.

Rather than trying to eliminate carbs completely, tracking allows you to understand how they fit into your overall diet.

### It teaches you about food

One of the biggest benefits of tracking macros isn't actually the numbers.

It's what you learn along the way.

After tracking for a while, you'll naturally start recognising which foods are high in protein, which meals keep you fuller and where additional calories might be creeping into your diet.

Eventually, you may not need to track everything because your understanding of food has improved.

### You can still eat normal food

Tracking macros doesn't mean you have to eat "perfectly".

A sensible approach should work around real life.

You should still be able to enjoy meals with your family, go to a restaurant, have a takeaway occasionally or enjoy the foods you like.

The aim isn't perfection.

It's consistency.

If most of your choices support your goals, the occasional meal that doesn't perfectly match your targets isn't going to undo all your hard work.

### It makes progress easier to understand

If you're training regularly but not seeing the results you expected, having some information about your nutrition makes it much easier to understand what might need changing.

Without tracking anything, you're largely guessing.

With a little information, you can make small adjustments, monitor what happens and learn what works for you.

### You don't have to track forever

This is an important one.

Tracking macros doesn't have to become something you do for the rest of your life.

Think of it as a learning tool.

It helps you understand portion sizes, protein intake, calories and the nutritional value of different foods.

As your knowledge and confidence improve, you may find that you can eat well without needing to track everything.

### Don't let perfect get in the way of good

If you've never tracked food before, don't worry about getting everything spot on from day one.

Start simple.

Track honestly.

Learn what you're currently eating.

Then make small improvements.

Your diet doesn't need to be perfect to make progress, just like every workout doesn't need to be your best ever.

Getting fitter and stronger comes from consistently doing enough of the right things over time.

Tracking your macros is simply one tool that can help make those things a little easier to understand.
